Every Reformed guy knows the progression.

You get saved at First Baptist. You survive youth group, church camp, ridiculous games, contemporary worship songs, and an altar call or two. Then somebody hands you Calvin’s Institutes. Suddenly you have opinions about everything. Before long, Grandma’s Baptist church seems embarrassingly shallow, you own three pipes, and you’re dressing like you’re on your way to bury Abraham Lincoln.

But maybe Grandma knew a few things.

In this episode, Pastor Joseph Spurgeon and Zach take a deliberately appreciative look at American evangelicalism. There are plenty of legitimate criticisms to make. Shallow preaching, entertainment-driven worship, theological rootlessness, seeker-sensitive churches, and youth ministries built around amusement deserve scrutiny.

But evangelicalism also taught generations of Christians to read their Bibles, pray, love Jesus, pursue personal holiness, preach the gospel, support missions, reach children, and actually tell unbelievers about Christ.

The Reformed world should deepen those instincts rather than despise them.
